Xbox's 2011 fall dashboard update eyes a November 25th release
We’ve been hearing and seeing all kinds of news about the upcoming fall update hitting the Xbox 360 and its ever-changing dashboard. But it looks like we might finally have learned the release date to the Windows 8 inspired, Kinect-heavy gaming interface. And it looks like November 25th — a.k.a. this year’s Black Friday — will be the chosen date.
If you aren’t expecting to wait out in line in the cold on Black Friday then you might want to pay attention with what GigaOM is reporting concerning what’s coming to everyone’s Xbox 360:
“Microsoft is targeting a Black Friday release of the Xbox Live update, according to sources, which would add the new video apps and features like Bing universal search. That could help build demand for Xbox sales over the holidays and will give existing Xbox Live members cool new toys to play with on their day off after Thanksgiving. The Lakeview code is still being modified, however, as Microsoft is still issuing weekly updates to the application framework.”
And if we were a betting blog we’d put our money on Major Nelson letting word out soon on when there’ll be a beta program for said update. But heads up, there’s a pre-update, update coming today that’ll prep your Xbox (hopefully) for this November.
But there’s a lot to look forward to, especially if you’re a TV buff. Though undoubtedly you won’t be getting free cable programming without a subscription to some sort of TV package from your cable provider. Think of how Netflix works — you still need a subscription to the service to use it on Xbox Live, this will more than likely be what’s to be expected when Xbox tries to become the next set-top cable box.
