App Review - Super Mega Worm (iPhone and iPad)
Mobile games have continuously showed us how bigger isn’t always better, and Super Mega Worm, with its simple premise and humble graphics, is a prime example of this. Gone are the times when throwing down 2 bucks for a game equated to a lame gaming experience. On the contrary, Mega Worm is living proof that cheap, mobile games are the future.

Most games have you rescuing humanity from evil or a non-human threat, but not Mega Worm. The game first starts off with a short movie that explains how our world has progressed through time. In the beginning the world is green, blue, and completely untainted, but as time advances the world slowly decays to a brown color palette. Mega Worm is based around the concept of humans destroying the earth, and humanity becoming the villain. Once the cutscene is over, we are introduced to a shot of two 16-bit characters, one who is littering and the other who is driving around a old broken down pick-up truck. Once the subtitles disappear, the game begins!
You start off as an egg in the ground, which you then have to break out of and squirm your way through the planet’s crust until you reach the surface and then eat the two characters just shown in the previous video. The concept of the game is to destroy all of humanity, and as this worm, you basically try to eat everything with your mouth until you can get the gun which fires from the mouth. Pretty intense, huh?
Eating fleeing animals, people, and even vehicles, cause you to grow larger, evoking even more damage as block pixels of blood rains from the sky. And that’s just the beginning since your worm will eventually be given bomb packs to add to your worms’ notches.
Controls are easy but take some getting used to since like many iOS games, Mega Worm require the use of a virtual D-pad and buttons. But if you aren’t into that style you can always turn on the slider controls, which allow players. The
Its main menu tune is also quite charming, calling to mind the enticing music from Super Metroid. Which interestingly enough, seems to be the inspiration for the title screen’s appearance.
The game has two main modes; story and the attack mode, the latter in which all you do is go nuts and kill everything in sight. The game is linked to Gamecenter to provide awesome carnage stats through achievements, as well as leaderboards for posting your scores to compare with friends, so everyone can see how they are ranking up.
Oh, and did I forget to note that that this game is a universal app, able to be purchased only once and moved over to any of your iOS devices with a single sync of iTunes?
Overall
This game is just pure entertainment and quite artsy, even. It is completely addictive, and not to mention that if your friends play it you’ll be determined to beat their scores on Gamecenter. Super Mega Worm is a must have if you’re into indie styled games, the 8 - 16 bit scene, or just into simple yet addictive titles. Throw Super Mega Worm on iPhone 4, complete with the retina display, and smack on a pair of headphones, and you’ll be fully immersed for hours!
Update: As of the time this review was posted, Super Mega Worm is on sale for only $0.99.
