Browser (Free) - Thor's 16-bit adventure is full of retro win

    Thor: Bring the Thunder

    Platform: (PC) Internet browser
    Price: Free
    Developer: BigPixel Studios

    Our Impressions

While it’s not the greatest thing since Samus blew up Zebes, Thor: Bring the Thunder is a satisfying sidescroller that will keep the lore of Earth’s mightiest Norse mythology figure on the forefront of your brain. With 4 worlds to travel to, you’ll meet such enemies as The Enchantress and The Absorbing Man throughout your adventure.

The arrow keys control Thor’s movements while Z, X, and SPACE trigger his attacks; Swing attack, Throw attack, or Mjolnir’s Lightning attack, respectively. Surprisingly, controls are quite spot on and accurate to every slight push of a key, meaning that if you die it’s entirely your fault. The levels themselves aren’t huge dungeons with multiple pathways — on the contrar, they are straightforward and only branching off to give you access to health or lightning orbs. After collecting 3 orbs you’ll be able to do Mjolnir’s Lighting attack which will damage any minion or enemy within sight on your screen. Each world is broken up into 3 stages and a separate boss battle with one of Thor’s famous arch-nemesis’. The difficulty of the game isn’t anything out of Asgard but it’s not for the feint of heart who can’t handle a few baddies along with some some-what precise jumps.

Oh, and try not to fall onto any spikes, cause if you do… well, let’s just say if you’ve played Mega Man before you’ll recognize the animation.

     Overall

    Thor: Bring the Thunder
Play it for free in your internet browser

For a free to play game that lasts a good 20 to 30 mins, even if you’ve got some sidescrolling skill, Bring the Thunder does quite the job at making you relive the days of those cheap, wannabe Super Mario Bros. games made in the late days of the NES.

Complete with some rock solid visuals and tight controls, this is definitely a fun game to go to whenever you’re in the mood for a quick gaming fix — not to mention, pump you up for the arrival of Thor in theaters.
