24 years of Windows box design - The good and the bad

Microsoft has not always been remembered for their "box art" and maybe they don't want to be -- they want to be remembered for their OS, Windows, and that's about it -- the 98 troubles, the XP search puppy, the Vista haters and the 7 hopes. But through it all, before you loaded the OS, you opened, looked at, and forgot the Windows package. So now we take a trip down memory lane...

In this Episode, T3ch H3lp undertakes a new Studio! The first to be a guest in-studio is Will Chase. Also, via Skype, we have Nick Mahar and Adrian Van Zyle. We all really like the Photoshop iPhone app, but we are afraid it is a little too simple. Also they should have plugins for sale, like 20 cents each.

We also give you a Sneak Peek of the new Dell Adamo XPS. We realise their is no real use for it except mailing it in a manila envelope and cutting wedding cake with it. But it is oh-so shiny!!!!!!!

PS3 Slim Ad - Sony makes Political Shots at Nigeria?

Recently Sony re-released their PS3 with a cheaper price, improved audio for blu-ray but no backwards compatibility. The new marketing strategy apparently is working well but maybe one negative thing about their video is that it takes a shot at Nigeria.

Watch for yourself.

If you noticed he says he would be a quote,"Nigerian Million". Taking shots at internet scams that try to get your money for "help". Sony has recently taken down these adds and changed to say,"Listening everything you read on the internet lead to WWII." Which i think is a little more funny but did the other one really offend anyone?

Hey Verizon, Sprint, AT&T, T-Mobile, and the Rest

I was a denizen of Japan from 1999-2005 and we all know about their cell phone technology. But that's not what I'm interested in, I'm more interested in why the hell the major cell phone providers charge an absurd amount for their service. According to this article on Slashdot, US plans are among the highest in the world, at $52.99 per month on average. So what does this have to do about Japan? I would take their service plan any day of the week over what any one in the US provides.

Here was my plan and details in Japan:

  • About 2800 Yen per month for service. Around the time I had a cell phone, it would've been roughly $23-$28 per month.
  • I believe it was unlimited minutes within the same service, 10 yen (~$0.10) per minute outside of service if you were the one making the call.
  • Unlimited texting within the same service (called C-mail). 10 yen a message for texting to another cell phone service numder.
  • Your phone had a legitimate e-mail address, which was either the cellphone number or some other set e-mail. This was how cellphones texted to each other outside their service. It also made things like sending data to yourself much easier.
  • I don't believe you get charged for web browsing, but it's super limited anyway.

The only thing is is that Japanese cell phone providers don't give much of a discount for phones when you sign up.

And here's my plan with Verizon

  • Basic plan is $55 per month.
  • I get 450 minutes, unlimited nights and weekends.
  • I don't have a text message plan. Otherwise its $0.20 per message, in or out. But I figure since I don't text that much, as long as I don't have 25 texts per month, which is what would've costed to get the 500 messages a month plan, I'm good.
  • Any data transfer is tacked on, but I'm not privy to the rate.

My average cell phone bill here in the US is $60 per month. My average cell phone bill in Japan was $30 per month.

So basically I'm getting jipped off here. Not only do I pay more for mediocre service, but I pay more for crappy US cell phone technology (actually the US pretty much caught up with Japan, but they like to charge you for every damned feature).

Video | HTC HD2 demo preview - Makes the iPhone look like a snack!

As you can tell by the picture, this thing is a beast! The screen is almost as big as the iPhone itself, and the interface looks really slick. Its all about the looks, and the boldness of this gadget. But the really cool part is the guts...

Paranormal Activity-It doesn't dissapoint - Scary as F...

Striking at all of the right chords, the film's main focus - which seems to be the only original one - relies heavily on sound and atmosphere throughout the film. A refreshing aspect of Paranormal Activity lies in its minimal amount of special effects. With an exemplary use of sound, the film works on the nerves of the viewer by repeatedly assaulting them with a brilliant balance of silence, soundscape and subtle visual effects.

Furthermore, throughout Paranormal Activity what stands out is the lack of CGI-dependent special effects. The greater portion of special effects are conventional types of the film school variety. The better portion of special effects are of a psychological nature.

As most of the demonic domestic violence in the film is located in the bedroom of the sleeping couple, this makes the film stand out as a supernatural thriller because of the element of psychological framework. In one interview, director Oren Peli says, "I think a lot of people can relate to the question of what happens at night when you're most vulnerable." Peli's statement becomes evident after each night of relentless demonic terrorism that's inflicted upon the suburban homeowners in Paranormal Activity.

The movie also is big because it's original way of being distributed through the U.S. by use of Demand.com to try and get the film to play in your area.

The movie isn't very different from other films in how scary it is, but their is something that makes it truly terrifying. The reason you will have nightmares is because you believe that something like this could happen. The movie being shot with a single camera brings belief and makes you afraid that this seems so real.

I myself as well as other felt like we were "seeing things" as we were in our cars or entering our homes. It's of course all psychological but still you mind can play crazy tricks. And don't think i'm just another scared person who hates scary movies. I hate scary movies because they aren't REALLY scary, but this one will amaze.

I HIGHLY recommend to anyone but beware, you almost WILL have nightmares.
