EVO2k11 ends with a bang - Daigo dethroned as Street Fighter world champion

Daigo and Justin Wong seemed to be different worlds than the one where EVO2k11 — the world’s biggest tournament and grandest stage for all things fighting games — was held. Newcomers from all around the world came to show off their stuff, and there’s no shortage of verbage to describe the feat that some of these unknowns accomplished.

Going down at the Rio casino and resort in Las Vegas, NV, thousands upon thousands of players from around the globe competed in all types of games; Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Mortal Kombat 9, to the grand finale seen in Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition.

Fuudo of Japan took the title of world’s greatest SF player, but we’ll get into that first.

Let’s talk “Mahvel Baby”!

After a number of nail-biting fights, an 8 year old Hulk player, as well as the elimination of Justin Wong, the finals proved to be nothing but what everyone wanted: full of hype.

And onto the main event, AE — otherwise known as Street Fighter IV. The top 8 was full of “killers”, or players who were predicted to go all the way, and none disappointed. Daigo went head to head with Poongko, a Korean rising star who would take off his belt everytime he went up for a fight, and lost to his stylin’ Seth:

Daigo fell to losers bracket and was taken out of the tournament before reaching the grand finals for the first in 3 years by USA player, Latif. This didn’t impair the finale however, as Latif had probably the hardest route to take of any SF player in EVO history, needing to go through international killers Takido, Daigo, and Poongko to reach Fuudo who was waiting for him for at the end:

In the end it was Fuudo who took the crown playing as Fei Long, defeating Latif 3 matches in a row, ending the reign of Daigo as the world’s best Street Fighter player. I doubt Latif felt sorry for himself, probably losing his nerve in the finals due to never expecting to knock out Poongko, let alone Daigo himself.
