Gamefly heading up its own digital distribution application
I’m an avid promoter of Gamefly, having taken a subscription in 2007 and never looking back since. I try convert as many Blockbuster customers as possible toward it, and now it looks like there’s a whole new reason to be part of the club. Gamefly is ready to launch its own digital distribution application for desktops where you can download PC titles, as well as manage your games que, and read the latest news.
Valve’s got Steam, EA’s got Origin, and now Gamefly’s got their own “Gamefly Goes Digital Beta”. The details are scarce and even a little curious since the wording in the promotion are a little confusing; let’s first watch it and then dissect it:
From what I take out of it all current Gamefly subscribers get this new service for free, which doesn’t make sense since all digital distribution services are free — Steam and Origin don’t charge for the right to use them.
During the video it’s demonstrated you can download PC titles straight to your deesktop, though when Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood is selected and downloaded it shows a price tag of $59.99, its retail price — so is this just a store to buy the games or rent them? Again, this is confusing.
Besides the digital model, the client will tie straight to your Gamefly account, allowing you access to manage your Game que, share your latest activity with other Gamefly members, and create a sort of friends list to stay in touch with them.
The closed beta for this new program / service begins September 8th.
