Griffin iClear case review (for iPod Classic)

Apple products were meant to be shown off without ugly cases and whatnot covering their industrial designs. While protective films are the ideal solution for many users, others will require something a bit more solid. The Griffin iClear is a two piece hard shell case, custom molded for a variety of products.

Features

  • transparent, unobtrusive design
  • tough polycarbonate shell

Our Impressions

The iClear comes in a matte clear plastic box which includes the front piece, as well as two rear pieces depending on the capacity of your iPod.

The front half is completely clear and curves to match the contour of the faceplate. The border around the click wheel is smooth and does not impede upon controls. The rear has a nice matte finish which feels great in the hand. A small Griffin logo is carved in between the iPod logo and capacity engraving. The entire bottom of the case is left open with the exception of plastic curving around the corners of the iPod. This allows dock connectors and other accessories to easily be plugged in although protection does suffer a bit. The hold slider and headphones jack are also given enough space to access properly and are actually fairly well protected.

Installation was fairly painless. We first wiped the crumbs off of our iPod and plopped it right onto the front piece. Then we clicked on the rear and the case locked itself in place. The design of the locking mechanism ensures that the case will not come off no matter how hard you try. You’ll have to stick a coin into the ridge at the bottom and twist for it to separate.

Overall

We really enjoy the way the iClear protects our iPod. Ports are easy enough to access and the overall look is fairly clean. Another thing the clear cases allow you to do is to stick decorative film underneath the hard shell. In our case, we decided to apply an Infectious Skin and it worked out just fine. We’ve gone through many cases for our iPod classic and this is easily one of our favorites.

Pro’s

  • Doesn’t take away iPod’s looks
  • Securely fits
  • Makes way for easily accessible ports

Con’s

  • Adds some thickness
