Microsoft and Nokia enter into a partnership, plan to make sweet, sweet WP7 handsets

For the past several weeks it has been strongly rumoured that conglomerates Nokia and Microsoft would enter into a partnership, by way of which, the faltering Finnish phone manufacturer would adopt Windows Phone 7. Now that Nokia’s Capital Market Day is well under way, I’m proud to say: Nokia’s beginning to get their house in order, they’ve finally adopted Windows Phone 7.

Heading into the future, Windows Phone 7 will slowly begin to replace Symbian (and most likely MeeGo) as Nokia’s top tier smartphone operating system — although, current evidence as stated by Nokia suggests that both OSes are being kept alive for the time being. As the Espoo giant stated, Windows Phone 7 is becoming their “primary smartphone strategy.” Besides the twilight zone ambiance, Nokia isn’t just adopting the platform: they plan to help Microsoft overcome the current giants in the space.

“There are other mobile ecosystems. We will disrupt them.  There will be challenges. We will overcome them.  Success requires speed. We will be swift.” - Steve Balmer & Stephen Elop.

According to Microsoft, Bing and adCenter will be heavily implemented on Nokia handsets.

The fun doesn’t stop there either, oh no. Through this substantiated “alliance,” Nokia is looking to innovate on top of Microsoft services. The company stating that Ovi Maps will become a core component in Microsoft’s mapping service Bing, while their semi-successful application store will be integrated into the current Windows Phone marketplace. As one would expect with most Windows Phone 7 handsets, Xbox Live integration, as well as Office are on-board for the transition.

What’s your opinion on the whole Microsoft, Nokia partnership? For one, I’m most definitely thrilled. I was beginning to think Nokia employees had all but packed up shop, this venture then, will hopefully sway the oncoming tide. And bring the once former giant back to its throne as crafted for Goliath. Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
