Microsoft is looking at Windows 8 to breath life into PC gaming
Who keeps saying that PC gaming is dead? I want to know this once and for all, because it appears that at every single turn there’s someone who says they want to revive or spark the PC gaming market. Last time I checked, PC gamers were pretty happy with their copies of Starcraft 2, Civilization 5, and Team Fortress 2! Well regardless, Microsoft hopes that Windows 8 can — *sigh* — reinvigorate PC gaming. — Details after the break!
There isn’t much depth to this story to be honest - just one single quote from an unnamed source close to Microsoft, who told TechRadar, “Windows 8 will represent a real new push into PC gaming,” the source told TechRadar. “Gaming will be a key component for the whole OS.”
Whoopie! / sarcasm.
What exactly do they plan to do? Release an upgraded, more integrated Games for Windows service that mimics Xbox Live like a clone but only on the PC and then charge for it? I mean, I think there are enough features and luxuries out there that people can already do on their computers without such a tax on their online gaming; such as listen to their personal music, check Twitter, and watch Netflix.
Microsoft doesn’t seem to be the smartest tool in the shed on the subject, but then again they’ve just come off their long fought battle trying to be taken serious for their casual gaming presence (do you smell the irony?) with the Kinect. So I’m sure it’s the cockiness that’s talking right now, as well as a desire to make green paper rain from the sky; “The hardcore and casual console market is locked down. Time to try to quell the non-existent cries of PC gamers.”
Sure, PC gaming isn’t the mass appeal market where Call of Duty: Black Ops can shatter entertainment records alone. Yeah, I get that. What I don’t understand is why people like Microsoft are throwing money away at a group that doesn’t necessarily care about being reinvigorated. If you think about it, PC gamers seriously just want to be left alone and be given their old “rights” back; like dedicated servers, mod tools, and DRM free content. Heck, that’s not even Microsoft’s department! So what can they do to fix what’s really wrong with PC gaming? Nothing, really.
