Modern Warfare 3 gets approved faux cover of Time Magazine
Time Magazine is a name synonymous with prestige and journalistic esteem, however it feels like that integrety could all but be flushed down the toilet now that they’ve made their first commercial deal with Activision to allow a parodied Time cover for the upcoming Modern Warfare 3 title.
Made part of an exclusive pre-order bonus through Gamestop, those who put money down on the year’s most anticipated shooter can get their hands on a poster of the MW3 Time cover depicted Wall Street in shambles, not unlike how it is today (snicker snicker). But while gamers may think this shows the valdidity of the medium, others like Roger Ebert can help but pout and tear down the publication:
“Time mag sells its honor for a video game promotion. Sad, sad, sad.”
When asked to speak on this controversial decision, Time’s publisher, Kim Kelleher had this to say:
“This is where the boys are[…] This is a great way to connect with millions of people we might not have otherwise connected with.”
Richard Stengel, Time’s managing editor’s response was no different:
“I see this as a similar idea in a different medium — a medium that is one of the biggest entertainment franchises of all time.”
While old-timers may think this is a shocking move, it all makes too much sense to a print industry that badly needs money, and what better way to do so than connecting with the people who are supporting one of the biggest selling games of all time? It just makes financial sense, but the idealists would think that being a top publication runs off of magic and fairy dust.
Modern Warfare 3, and its apocalyptic atmosphere, launches Nov. 8th, 2011 — pre-order now and you too can own part of Time Magazine history :P
