Newborn Dies Because Parents Decide to Raise Virtual Child Instead

A Korean couple let their newborn starve to death so they could raise a virtual child online - and were finally sentenced to 2 years in prison. It seemed they just didn’t find their real child interesting enough, so they decided to spend 10 hours a day at internet cafe’s, while their baby was left to fend for itself. They fed their child only once a day, which was often spoonfuls of spoiled baby formula, and when she cried for more, the parents would beat her. You’d think this baby girl died because of the beatings, but she didn’t - she starved to death.

The parents found her dead when they returned to their home in Suwon, Korea, after an all-night gaming session last September. They decided to hide away at a relative’s home after an autopsy on the newborn found she had died of malnutrition.

This constitutes an inhumane crime where the defendants abandoned even the most basic responsibilities as parents, and is unforgivable beyond any excuse or reason.

Suwon District Court

The father of the baby, a 41-year-old taxi driver, and his 25-year-old wife were sentenced to two years in prison, but the woman’s term was suspended because she is pregnant, with a child who is not asking to be born into the same horrid situation.

The government says there are 2 million ‘internet addicts’ in Korea, which has a population of over 49 million and is considered one of the world’s most technologically advanced.
