Video - The New Version of Digg with Kevin Rose

The new version of Digg is almost here, and there is a mixture of opinions with fans - some say its great, and its going to be a breath of fresh air. Others claim that “the old Digg is gone” and that this is going to ruin what Digg used to be. I have to admit, I love this new revision, and I will probably end up using Digg a lot more, but it was working before, so what makes this better? - Kevin Rose explains…

What is coming on Digg?

There is going to be a heap of revisions that will make the new Digg cleaner, simpler and more personal than the previous site. We think the direction they are headed in is a more “social” experience, and a more intimate one. Instead of being herded into a public website, users are greeted with a personalized homepage, and are encouraged to connect with friends, and companies.

All Digg users will go through an “onboarding process” that asks them to follow friends, tastemakers and publishers.

Users will be asked to import their social graphs from Facebook, Twitter, etc. There’s also a suggested user list for users.

Their home page will no longer show just top stories by total votes. Instead, it will show links from people and publishers you follow, called My News.

Hugely popular stories on Digg will still be shown on a Top News channel. If a user diggs a story, all followers of that user will then see it in their feed, too, which is sort of like a retweet. This can create a “chain reaction,” says Rose, and can drive significant traffic.

Publishers will now be able to auto-publish their content via RSS feeds to Digg, eliminating the need for someone to add a story for the first time. Each story will start off with one Digg.

The process for adding a story manually is also much simpler – a user simply pastes the URL into Digg and the an image, title and summary are automatically generated.

What do you think of the new Digg?

Sure it seems to be copying lots of other social sites, like Twitter and Facebook, but wouldn’t it be nice to have the news come to you? I mean, we enjoy reading stuff that our friends post on Facebook and Twitter, but when it comes down to finding useful info, it is rare to find.

Digg is making a very smart move, one that is going to make it a much more comfortable and social process to find news, and just news. Heck, I have always wanted to be able to “follow” people on Digg, because I want to read what they read, and I respect their choices when it comes to relevant news. I think i’m Digging this new version…

What are your thoughts on the new Digg Version 4?
