Rumor - Nintendo to reveal "Wii 2" at E3, sources say it's stronger than PS3 and 360

We’ve been hearing about the “Wii 2” and “Wii HD” for years now, but apparently it’s never been more close to a reality than now. IGN and Game Informer are reporting that they’ve gotten wind from very reliable sources that Nintendo is planning to unveil their next home console at their annual E3 press conference this upcoming June. More interesting however, are the details in what the sources told IGN about what exactly this console will be offering spec-wise.

Quoting Game Informer’s article:

“We have confirmed with multiple sources that this new home system is capable of running games at HD resolutions. There are conflicting reports, however, as to whether its graphics will be comparable to those on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 – meaning it could surpass or fall short of those systems. Either way it will offer competitive specifications. Moving to HD should greatly help Nintendo and its new console in getting more multi-platform triple-A titles like Portal 2 or Mortal Kombat. This, in turn, will strengthen Nintendo’s historically poor relationship with third-party publishers/developers.

In fact, Nintendo is already showing publishers the system in an effort to get them interested and allow them plenty of time to start developing titles in anticipation of the system’s reported late 2012 launch. “

IGN’s Jim Reily has also written an article on the subject, confirming with their own sources that the system will run games at 1080p, will be fully backwards compatible with all Wii games, as well as adding a tid bit that we might hear something about this announcement much sooner than later:

“Our sources have said the the console is significantly more powerful than the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and that Nintendo’s intent is to recapture the hardcore market. Another source said it is capable of 1080p resolutions.

Additional sources tell IGN that Nintendo will release a pre-announcement this month with a full reveal expected at E3 and that the console will be backwards compatible with current Wii software.”

There’s got to be a lot more than coincidence working on this one, seeing as we have multiple sources from different places all saying the same thing. If this is all true then Nintendo sure seems like they’re uping their game to the next level, however I can’t help but feel that they’re doing this too late. It may going according to their original strategy, but how far are Microsoft and Sony’s next home consoles? Will the “Wii 2” end up becoming the next Dreamcast?
