Speck Fitted case for iPhone 4 / 4S review

When it comes to picking an iPhone 4S case, the decision can be pretty difficult to make. Every case offers a unique design and different features. One manufacturer that always fails to disappoint is Speck and today we’ll be looking at their Fitted case for the iPhone 4 and 4S. With its patterned cloth back, is it worthy of our recommendation? Full review after the break!

Features

  • Fits iPhone 4S and 4
  • Original styling and authentic fabrics designed to fit your personality
  • Fabric-wrapped hard-shell provides extra protection
  • Form-fitting design for a streamlined, tailored look

Our Impressions

For the purpose of our review Gadgets Boutique did not send the case with any packaging or accessories.

Design and Build Quality

The Speck Fitted is a two piece snap case. The thin front frame and rear shell lock together securely but can be easily removed due to the thin nature of the frame. A matte soft touch coating covers all surfaces of the case aside from the cloth backing. The plastic material for the case feels pretty sturdy but we’re certain the front half, when not on the phone, could easily be snapped with a bit of pressure.

The patterned, cloth backing is the highlight feature of the Fitted line of cases. The iPhone 4S version of the case alone comes in 15 designs, with different colored frames to match the pattern.

Speck has even partnered with a company called Zazzle so you can upload your own images to make a custom case.

Accessibility and Ergonomics

A large camera cutout is punched in the back. And when we say large, we mean massive. The hole measures 2 cm by 1.6 cm (about three quarters of an inch wide and a little over half and inch tall). You definitely won’t have any camera performance issues with this case and it’ll be fairly easy to clean that area without needing to remove the case.

The bottom port is nicely exposed with a cutout that stays near to the edges of the speaker and microphone but leaves ample room for larger dock connectors. Note that you will not be able to slot the phone with this case in many docks.

The power button, headphone jack, and volume buttons all have ample cutouts that allow for easy access.

The front edge does not interfere with home button operation. Even when swiping to the edge of the screen we didn’t really feel that the raised edge impeded in any significant way. The thing that might bother you in regards to the edge design is that some lint can collect on the inside border of the frame. However, did to the ease in removing halves of the case, you can just pull off the front for a quick occasional wipe down. If you get any small particle trapped between the frame and the glass, however, you will find tiny scratches on the face of the glass.

Protection

To be completely honest, I wouldn’t feel too good about dropping my phone with the Fitted on. That’s not to say it doesn’t provide adequate protection - it has a great lay on the table edge design and good overall coverage but the way the case is assembled, we’re positive that the shell would separate on impact. In fact, we’ve experienced this on the iPhone 3GS version of the Fitted.

Overall

The Speck Fitted is a really well made case that looks stylish, offers easy access to buttons, and provides decent protection. We do have some qualms about its ability to stay as one piece when dropped but besides that, the Fitted is definitely a case we’d recommend. To top it all off, Gadgets Boutique offers the case at $5 cheaper than retail with free shipping.

Pro’s

  • great, slim design
  • easy access to buttons and ports
  • good overall protection

Con’s

  • case will open when dropped
