Speck PixelSkin case review (for iPod Touch 4G)
We all know that Speck makes some killer cases for a variety of Apple products, and the PixelSkin (seen above) is no exception. Today we’ll take a look at the company’s offering for the latest iPod Touch. Just how good exactly is this silicone case?
Features
- Comfortable tiled texture
- Rubbery matte finish iPod touch silicone case
- Smooth grid texture for a comfortable grip
- Pixel insulation for serious protection
Our Impressions
The PixelSkin comes packaged in a simplistic box, featuring a hassle free “push to open” bit of plastic. We don’t usually discuss the box much but basically the plastic tray slides out of the cardboard sleeve when you depress a certain area. Inside, you just get the case. No manuals, no pack-ins, no crap.
The case itself features a matte finish on a very high quality silicone which should provice a decent amount of shock absorption. It feels great in the hand and is still fairly grippy. Of course, the name PixelSkin exists for a reason - the entire case is covered with individual cubicles, creating a unique look. In the bottom right hand corner, the Speck logo is affixed in silicone. An abundant border lines the sides of the case, allowing you to lay the device face down on a table without having to worry about the screen getting scratched. We thought the bottom area of the case would get in the way of the home button since it was so raised but it actually didn’t bother us much at all. Rather than having individual bumps for the volume buttons, there is one thin silicone line. It worked better than expected and looks quite nice as well. Despite this, we’d take the functionality of delineated silicone over the form of this layout any day. On the contrary, the sleep/wake button provides a much greater tactile feedback. The PixelSkin does a fairly good job of keeping off lint from our pocket although some bits were inevitably sandwiched into the rear pattern. The camera area is decently protected by a silicone border while not affecting camera performance a single bit. Attention to detail does not stop there. If you examine the case closely, you’ll find that the headphone jack area is slightly depressed and rounded so that your headphones will actually fit. The quality and design of the PixelSkin are simply put, amazing (and we’d expect no less of Speck!)
