Squarespace goes Social with new Widgets

Well, Squarespace has done it yet again, and we are super excited - They are launching some shiny new Social plugins for your Squarespace site that will allow you to share your other content from around the web, with your visitors and friends. There is a slew of features for each widget  and the cool part is they are already installed, so all you have to do is point, click and wiggle some sliders - More info after the break!

The Promo video we made for them

Brandon Davenport - made this epic promo video for Squarespace

The Twitter Widget

This is the best Twitter widget we have ever used. Its easy to use and add to your site, and the cool part is you can have as many as you want and there is no nasty coding required. The widget allows you to pull tweets from up to 5 people and it also adds their Avatars, Usernames and Links automatically. You can also filter their tweets using keywords, which is a nice touch.

You have a wide range of options to choose from, like being able to show and hide different elements like Avatars and Timestamps, and also controlling the layout and number of Tweets shown. You can edit it at any time, and the cool part is it is completely customizable via CSS and the Squarespace Wysiwyg editor.

The RSS Widget

There are many ways to pull RSS feeds on to your site, but they always require code, slow-downs and in my case, styling issues because it is in JavaScript, and that is hard to style. No more woes! Squarespace has a nifty RSS widget that allows you to add it in seconds and pull from one feed, or up to 5 all at the same time.

It allows you to change the layout, like enabling and disabling the date, title, source and author, along with being able to ad a “Read more” button, and show bits of text from each item. You can use the point and drag Squarespace Wysiwyg Editor, or CSS to make the RSS widget look really cool, and fit your site.

The Flickr Widget

Most of the Flickr widgets out there are somewhat sketchy, and Flickr’s is not customizable at all. You can pull photos from a search, profile, group, favourites and also filter within each. You can display them in a grid/thumbnail view, or a slide show with different effects.

You can edit things like Auto-Cropping, Slideshow Controls, How many thumbnails you want, and how long each slide should play. Again, you can customize the widget with the point and click Style editor from Squarespace, or dig into the CSS.

Remember: There are many more widgets to come!

How do I get these nifty widgets?

When you go into “Structure Editing Mode” and find your sidebar, click to either add a new section, or make a new section in the sidebar, and then add a widget. This will bring up the normal prompt, but there is a new tab up at the top right for “Social Widgets” and you can click on that, and create the widget you want.
