Steve Jobs said there was Multitasking on the iPhone 3 years ago

During the most exciting day in gadget history, Steve Jobs took the stage and introduced a device that would change smartphones forever, and have other companies drool over the success that was yet to come. It was dubbed the iPhone, and no sooner had it been announced that people lined up for miles just to touch the next-gen gadget, and hope that Apple had some left in stock. It’s hard to ignore the excitement to look into minor details, but this afternoon when I sat down and watched the iPhone keynote again I discovered what could be the best Easter egg in iPhone history…

Steve Jobs announces iPhone… wait, multitasking?

Direct quote from the 2007 iPhone keynote - 8:18 into the video (above)

…and today, were going to show you a software breakthrough, software that’s at least 5 years ahead of what’s on any other phone. Now how do we do this? Well, we start with a strong foundation. iPhone runs OS X. [cheers]

Now… [cheers] why… [more cheers] why would we want to run such a sophisticated operating system on a mobile device? Well, because it’s got everything we need. It’s got Multitasking, it’s got the best networking, it already knows how to power manage, we’ve been doing this on mobile computers for years. It’s got awesome security, and the right apps! It’s got everything from Cocoa and the graphics, and it’s got core animation built in, and it’s got the audio and video that OS X is famous for. It’s got all the stuff we want, and it’s built right into iPhone.

Now wait a minute, I’m confused

Was this eventual, non-existing feature just some 10 second subliminal buzz? Or was it just a slip up? Either way, we know for a fact that the iPhone didn’t have Multitasking until three years later when iOS 4 was introduced, and that Steve Jobs stood on stage three years prior and subtly told us that “It’s built right into iPhone”.

Maybe I’m getting mixed messages, but I can’t argue with it - it’s right there in the video!
