t3ch Review - Elago M2 Stand for iPhone

There’s no doubt that the iMac is one of the most iconic computer designs ever crafted. Elago apparently thinks this as well, seeing as the display-supporting aluminum M2 Stand for iPhone and iPod touch obviously pays tribute to it. It’s certainly got the look down, but hows the functionality and overall build?

Elago M2 Stand for iPhone (Silver)

Features

  • Solid aluminum construction
  • Cable management
  • Compatible with the iPhone 3G/3GS/4 and most multimedia smartphones
  • Phone case removal unnecessary

Review

Starting with the packaging, you can tell that the M2 Stand is a very high quality product. The slightly rectangular box is of matte black cardboard with the occasional glossy black lettering. A label seals the box shut and details the product’s features. After slicing through this we came across the actual product enveloped in bubble wrap. Nothing else is included in the box.

Machined from a solid chunk of aluminum, the M2 not only looks great but is also very sturdy. Per the iMac’s design, you’ll find holes on the rear for you to string your audio jack and syncing cable through. Two rubber strips line the sides of the bottom of the stand so that it doesn’t slide around on your desk. The same goes for the two rubber nubs on the hooks on which your iPhone rests. Behind the rubber nubs are two holes just large enough for the speaker/mic on the bottoms of iPhones. This allows for what Elago describes as “easy video calling.” The back of the stand has a bunch of text etched on, describing the function of the product, where it was made (Korea) and designed (California), as well as the company’s website — a subtle touch that gets the message across without shoving it right in your face or using adhesive stickers. In terms of compatibility, your iPhone will fit great even if you have a case on it.

Of course, much adjust-ability is sacrificed due to the build of the stand. Aside from being able to rotate the orientation of your iPhone and wiggling it around to slightly change the angle, you can’t do much to change the way you view your device while it’s resting on the stand. Another thing we would’ve wished for is more padding around the region that the iPhone reclines on so as to minimize scratches. There is a clear plastic sticker that says “M2 Mobile Stand” there that somewhat helps.  Although build quality was quite good overall, we’d like to note that our unit came with a slight imperfection on the base.

Overall

At a price of $30, we can’t say the M2 Stand is cheap but it definitely isn’t made to be so. If you’ve got an iMac or aluminum MacBook, this pedestal will fit right in on your desk. Not a big fan of the silver color? Elago also makes a black version of the M2 with the exact same features and materials.

Pro’s

  • Great build quality
  • Looks great
  • Well designed

Con’s

  • Pricey for what it is

Price: $29.99
