My Experience
Speck has been known for pretty amazing looking cases for the iPod touch and iPhone form factor, but will that same reputation move over onto the much bigger iPad? The one thing that I think an iPad case needs is style — yes, style! Without it the $500 to $600 you spent on it won’t end up making you look like the hotshot tech eficianado you aspire to appear as. And while there is some sarcasm to that, we all know it’s true. But what about safety? Again, spending half a grand on a tablet device isn’t chump change, so you’re going to want to invest in a case that protects the iPad like a tank.
Thankfully, the people over at Speck know that these two very important features are exactly what customers are looking for. And after trying out the new Candyshell case for iPad I got to say they nailed it in both departments.
When inspecting the inside of the case, it reveals a soft, rubber interior that keeps the iPad from jiggling around, and if dropped the rubber manages to be quite shock absorbent. The exterior of the case, the rear in particular, is made hard to the touch and follows the curvature of the iPad’s backing. There isn’t any protection for the screen, however the bezeling on the front edges of the case are raised in such a fashion to prevent the iPad’s screen from ever touching any surface its laid face-down upon.
The case also makes sure that the headphone jack, volume control, and speaker all have cut-outs to make sure there’s no hinderence on the iPad’s functionality. And on the bottom of the case, there’s a convenient flip-out compartment that allows for easy access to the iPad’s connector port, as well as making sufficient room for the Apple Universal Dock if you own it.
The glossy finish on the back however does attract more than its fair share of scratches. After sustained use the rear of the case does show quite a lot of wear and tear, especially if your iPad is being transported in a bag and getting knicked around. And on rubberized edges, when ran against a hard surface or even again just being transported from place to place, the rubber will rub off due to friction.
Overall
The Speck Candyshell does everything any iPad case should do, and it does it very well. Once you dress up your iPad with it all you need do is forget that it’s even on there. The only issues arise from the cosmetic imperfections of the glossy finish on the case’s backing, as well as the rubberized bezelment at times chafing off. Other than that however, it’s a case that’s definitely work checking out if you’re in the market for a practical and affordable iPad case.
