Twitter acquires Tweetdeck for loads of cash
Which iOS twitter client do you use? If you’re like most then probably TweetDeck (though I’m not one of them!) Well, sad to say that it looks like Tweetdeck is going to be acquired by Twitter for roughly $50 million. What’s this mean for the future of the mobile and desktop app, we’re not exactly sure.
So why would Twitter want to go after a client in the first place? Well, ads, to get straight to the point. Twitter’s been one to skip around the idea of putting ads on its service, while client producers aren’t so carefree. Money is the name of the game and Twitter has felt the cold, threatening hand of a number of applications that were drawing the “core” user base away from Twitter. For instance, most of the power users, y’know the kind that constantly tweet on a daily basis and have hundeds of followers? Yeah, well it’s those guys that Twitter is after since they’re constantly feeding the machine. According to some statistics, many Twitter members join up one day and quit it the next. This trend is what’s been scaring Twitter since the power users aren’t using the official Twitter site or its client — they’re swimming for open waters, clinging to Tweetie, Tweetbot, and TweetDeck. And along with that come ad dollars that could potentially be Twitter’s, not someone else’s.
The deal for Tweetdeck hasn’t been made public yet but it has been done. What’s this mean for long time users of the client is up in the air. I personally am hoping they’d redesign the web-app so I can finally manage multiple accounds, because that’s the whole reason why I need to go to another client in the first place on my desktop. Though I’ve never had a problem using Twitter’s official iOS app, but that’s probably because I used to be an Echofon user and then Twitter bought them out and utilized their technology. Can we expect Twitter to do the same to what Tweetdeck’s been running with all this time? I’m sure we’ll find out soon.
