Vocaloid's Hatsune Miku will be performing "Live" at Anime Expo 2011

A virtual pop-star in Japan, Hatsune Miku doesn’t get tired from performing live concernts because well, she’s not a real person. That being said, wherever her fans crave her SEGA can simply ship out the transparent screens and gear necessary to captivate audiences anywhere. And come July 2nd, she’ll be rocking out alongside her fellow Vocaloid characters in front of an American audience at the Nokia theater for Anime Expo in Los Angeles, California.

Marc Perez
Chairman and CEO of the Society for the Promotion of Japanese Animation

“Fans in North America have been clamoring for Miku to perform here and we have listened. We’re extremely excited to be able to present this 21st Century star at Anime Expo in what promises to be an unforgettable experience for all.”

I’m a long time anime and Japanese video game enthusiast, and as such I frequent annual anime conventions, like Anime Expo.  So around this time of year, I lurk through their forums in search for which guests will be performing at this year’s con. Past guests have included Gackt, Miyavi, Aya Hirano, Sophia, Oreskaband, Mel, Kotoko, and countless others. Well, as I read through tons of posts of many fans clamoring and demanding for this, I, in a million years never thought this would actually go down. But now it’s happening; world famous Hatsune Miku, the anime character used to market the Yamaha Vocaloid software, and more recently, official mascot for the 2011 Toyota Corolla, will be performing “live” on stage in all her 3D glory at this year’s convention.

We originally posted about Miku’s debut back in Japan early last year, and even the world’s media was taken aback by the realism and energy presented by a 3D model on stage. While of course many people just scoffed and pointed a finger at those “crazy Japanese”, this wasn’t the first time something like this went down. In 2005, the Gorillaz performed in a similar fashion, with holograms on stage, during the Europe MTV music awards.
