Xbox testing new disc format, offering preview program sign up's
Microsoft has repeatedly denied that they’re heading the Blu-Ray route, even when their own HD-DVD crapped out of the next-gen dvd race. Well, it seems that they’re up to something, though it still isn’t Blu-Ray. Sources close to the company rumor that it’s all a means to free up an extra 1GB of space on already existing DVD’s, nothing spectacular there. However, Xbox is running a preview program for it and are offering Halo: Reach to all those who get selected. Umm, score!
Major Nelson (a.k.a. Larry Hyrb), if you have follow his tweets is always talking about how he’s running from meeting to meeting, and I am always curious as to what he actually does. He seems to be more of a hands-off community manager if you ask me. Not much a spokesman either, but just a face to put on the company so people don’t think Steve Ballmer or Master Chief is behind all the flashing lights over at Microsoft.
That being the case, Nelson announced on his blog yesterday that Xbox was going to be holding another preview program, this time not for a dashboard update but rather for a new disc format they’re trying out. If sources are correct then they’re going to be needing thousands of Xbox Live subscribers, both Silver and Gold (USA only). And with the incentive of Halo: Reach for any accepted in this preview, there’s absolutely nothing to lose for anyone interested in becoming a part of it.
UPDATE: Apparently Microsoft has reached their target amount of previewers. To check your status, connect to Xbox Live on your system and check your “Connect Dashboard” page. If you see an update pending then you’ve been selected and you’ll receiving Halo: Reach in or around 2 weeks.
