Windows Series 7 - The complete Keynote breakdown

It finally happened; Today in Barcelona at 3:11PM Steve Balmer graced the stage, ready to reveal the latest mobile platform from the Redmond situated company. During the opening minutes of the presentation Balmer posed, that newly introduced mobile operating systems have to be consumer friendly. Did Microsoft achieve this?

Sony Ericsson Vivaz Pro rocking Symbian 5th Edition

We're proud to commence our coverage of Mobile World Congress, and with that being said let's get to some news.

Sony Ericsson announced their latest Symbian 5th edition handset the Vivaz Pro. The phone is believed to be an almost direct doppelganger of its counterpart, the original Vivaz. Engadget had some hands on time with the device and they felt as if it used a "warmed-over" user interface. With that being said they also felt that it could be an N97 mini killer. As far as specifications are concerned none have been made public.

Microsoft's Mobile World Congress Keynote is tomorrow

Windows Mobile 7 is expected to steal the show at Mobile World Congress; which is why the majority of mobile enthusiasts (myself included) are anxiously awaiting Microsoft's CEO, Steve Balmer to address the public. It's already been revealed that the latest mobile OS from the Redmond based company won't support flash, but what other goodies, if any, are in store?

Engadget will be live-blogging the event, depending on where you live the following times correspond with the keynote. If you're not interested in reading the live blog, we'll be bringing you a summarised, play-by-play variant later in the day.

Breaking: Windows Mobile 7 lacks Flash

Following in the  footsteps of the iPhone, Adobe announced today that Windows Mobile 7 won't support flash. Of course Windows Mobile 7 hasn't been announced yet but we're fairly certain that the exclusion of flash is not destined to change.

Here's what Adobe had to say:

"Microsoft and Adobe are working closely together. While the newest version of Windows Phone won't support Flash at initial availability, both companies are working to include a browser plug-in for the full Flash player in future versions of Windows Phone. More details will be shared at Microsoft MIX next month."

Whilst this most likely refers to Windows Mobile 7, it could be argued that "the newest version of Windows Phone" is actually Windows Mobile 6.5.3. -- Just putting it out there.

Video: Forget the Kevlar - Blackberry Stops a Bullet

Next time you decide to get into a gun wielding fight, it is suggested that you take a Blackberry with you. A woman in an Ohio restaurant was sitting with her gun-toting boyfriend, when his gun accidentally went off, shooting her in the leg. Lucky for her, the Blackberry in her pocket intercepted the bullet; unfortunately, the handset is no more. It looks as through she had some kind of neoprene rubber case on her phone - whether that contributed to this miraculous feat is still to be seen.

Joikuspot turns any run of the mill Nokia N900 into a mobile hotspot

Portable WiFi hotspots are clearly a growing mega-trend, the popularity of devices such as the MiFi and the Overdrive are testament to this. If you own a Nokia N900 and decided not to opt for a mobile hotspot, Joikuspot sets out to change that. Recently released for Maemo, Joikuspot allows any run of the mill N900 to be used as a mobile hotspot -- similar to the recently announced SIMFi. Matthew Miller of NokiaExperts recently tested the application. Over a T-Mobile 3G connection he was seeing data speeds of:

  • 1810+ kbps down
  • 0 kbps up

Sure the speeds aren't great, but it seems like a viable alternative, especially if you already own an N900.
