iPhone and iPod Touch OS 3.0 - Features, Download and Important Facts

The blood of Inspiration is pumping through the veins of every apple enthusiast everywhere! All over the world, owners of iPhones and iTouches are chomping at the bit for the final release of the iPhone 3.0 OS, the biggest upgrade in iPhone history.

The features include:

Copy & Paste text. When you double-tap over text, you will get a "cut, copy, and paste" bubble dialog. Double-tap again and a "paste" bubble will appear if there's anything stored in your clipboard. This works across applications. You can expand your selection points using your thumbs and, if you accidentally paste something you didn't want to paste, just shake your iPhone to undo it.

Copy & Paste photos. You can also copy and paste photos. Now you will be able to select multiple photos by tapping the action button, copy some of them, and paste them in an email, ready to send.

New Spotlight. iPhone OS 3.0 will allow you to search across the entire information contained in your device, no matter where, as soon as the information is supported it. If an application is written to support the new Spotlight, its data will also be available in the search.

Search in Mail, Calendar, and iPod. These Apple applications have specific search interfaces. The search in Mail doesn't support the message content yet, but it supports searching in IMAP servers—that will save a lot of time logging into Gmail.

3G Tethering. This feature will allow you to connect your iPhone 3G to a laptop, to use it as a modem to access the internet. Carriers still have to sign-off on it, and probably charge more for it. None have announced it yet.

Landscape keyboard. Apple has added the landscape keyboard mode to other applications, like Mail, SMS, and Notes.

Multimedia messaging. A big one to send rich content to people without mail-enabled telephones: The new MMS function will allow you to include everything, from images to sound to vcards (no word on video, however.) Personally, I find these usesless having email, but some people seem to want it.

Support for new calendar types. In iPhone OS 3.0 you will be able to subscribe to calendars on the web using two protocols: CalDAV—supported by Google and Yahoo—and subscriptions via the .ics format—which is what Apple uses in iCal.

Improved stocks application. The stocks application now allows you to read related news, so you can enjoy yourself learning about the latest market scandals, stock crashes, and executives getting bonus packages from government aid while their companies sink into hell. Thank you, Apple.

Stereo Bluetooth A2DP audio. You will be able to pair your iPhone 3.0 with a stereo Bluetooth A2DP device, like headphones or speakers.

Note syncing with iTunes.

Automatic login in Safari. The new version of Safari will remember login credentials, so you won't need to introduce your username and password again while accessing Scoreland your work intranet.

Shake to shuffle music. If you are in your iPod application, you just need to shake it to start the shuffling mode. Hopefully this will be optional for sports people out there.

Wi-Fi auto-login. In case you have a subscription to a paid hotspot, your iPhone or iPod touch will autolog into it.

Anti-phishing. Mobile Safari now can warn you against malicious sites trying to scam you.

Extended parental controls. Adult content filters can now be applied to movies, TV shows, and applications, in addition to web sites and music (porn apps, here we come).

Peer-to-peer Bluetooth connectivity. A new API will allow for two iPhones to connect directly—peer-to-peer—via Bluetooth.

Browse remote content. While the built-in iPod application doesn't allow you to browse songs in other people's iPhones or iPod touch, third-party applications will allow you to do that, according to Apple's Forstall.

Use your iPhone/touch to control peripherals. A new API will let you use your iPhone or iPod touch as a control to your accessories. In this example, the iPhone is being used to equalize the sound in a loudspeaker.

Pricing

iPhone OS 3.0 will be a free upgrade to all iPhone users, including the first generation (not all features will be supported in the first generation, like Stereo Bluetooth support). iPod touch users will be able to but it for $US9.95. You can download the 3.0 Beta (if you dare) at the bottom. Note, once you upgrade you can not downgrade to an earlier OS you can only upgrade to newer betas and to the final release.

Microsoft giving away Windows 7 for free - May 5th

There certainly has been a lot of discussion about Windows 7 in the last few weeks. A lot of folks want to know when they can get their hands on the official RC, when we are going to RTM, and what I had for breakfast. I’m pleased to share that the RC is on track for April 30th for  download by MSDN and TechNet subscribers. Broader, public availability will begin on May 5th.

On behalf of everyone here, I would to thank all of our beta testers for helping us get to this point. You guys have been busy. At the peak of the feedback cycle, we were receiving a “Send Feedback” report every 15 seconds for an entire week. Since then, the engineering team has been busy analyzing the feedback, fixing bugs, and working hard to improve the overall experience.
Many of your suggestions helped us refine the new and improved taskbar, the behavior of Aero Peek, Touch, Windows Media Player, and much more. In case you have missed the previous E7 blog entry outlining some of these changes in detail, you can read about them here and here.

Download Windows 7 RC If you have a subscription to MSDN or TechNet, you can download Windows 7 RC now. Otherwise, you can download Windows 7 RC starting May 5, 2009.

Download it here (on may 5th)

First swine flu death in U.S.

GENEVA, Switzerland (CNN) -- The World Health Organization raised its pandemic alert to 5, its second-highest level Wednesday, indicating the outbreak of swine flu that originated in Mexico is nearing widespread human infection.

Patients wait at a hospital Wednesday in Mexico City. The swine flu outbreak began in Mexico.

Dr. Margaret Chan, the U.N. agency's director-general, said the decision mean to raise the alert to 5 on its 6-point scale indicated that all countries should "immediately" activate pandemic preparedness plans. "This change to a higher phase of alert is a signal to governments, to ministries of health and other ministries, to the pharm industry and the business community that certain actions now should be taken with increased urgency and at an accelerated pace," Chan said. The annoucement came as the number of people infected with swine flu increased rapidly across the world, and health officials scrambled to get more information about the virus -- which has no vaccine. Zune HD - Specs Pictures and Features

My Take on things

Ever since Apple has taken over the music and cellular market, hundreds of company's have been knawing at the bit, and every time, apple has given them a firm smack to the face with either a new product or just flaunting their awesomeness.

Just about two years ago, Microsoft made Apple loose balance. They pushed out a product that apple fan boys thought was a joke, the Zune. "The bigger they are, the harder they fall" was Microsoft's minds.

Although the Zune was a huge media and social up stir, it just wasn't enough for apple to blink an eye at. Example, as soon as the 30 gig Zune hit store shelves, apple pushed out the 80 gig classic which blew the Zune out of the water. Later, Microsoft released an 80 gig model, but soon after the iPod Nano was all the craze with the 3rd installment. Microsoft pushed out a new line of Zune "Nano's" but they were a failure, and ultimately showed the true failure of imitation.

In a last desperate attempt, Microsoft pushed out the Zune 120 gig ( aka the ipod classic 120 gig) and it just put the final hork on the candle of hope.

Recent up stir in the geek universe has revealed a final attempt for Microsoft to introduce something original, something new. They are building another iPod clone. Yes, But, the thing is (believe it or not) it might be better...

Now, the good stuff

The Zune HD is the latest rumer from the Zune galaxy, the rumors include: An O-LED screen. O-LED is one of the latest and greenest display technologies A full (ipod touch sized) multi-touch display A slim, thin design

Update - 4/16/09 - 3:30 pm

The new details also mention a Web browser on the Zune HD, which in turn supports multitouch. No word on what kind of browser this will be, but let's hope it won't be anything similar to Internet Explorer on Windows Mobile. As previously reported, the Zune HD is set to launch this fall (probably September) with new details of international availability in Canada, the U.K, and France.                                     PC World.com

Also, why is it Zune"HD" what makes it HD. Well, it has a display unlike any other portible device. A display with an aspect ratio of 16:9. Further, the device and updated Zune Marketplace will offer HD media and support for "3D Xbox games."

The visible port on the side of the device is an HDMI out, but that looks to be mostly wishful thinking, since the device's slim profile leads one to believe it is actually Micro USB.

iPhone/iTouch Firmware 3.0 Announced

Apple is soon releasing their 3.0 software and I (including everyone) am very exited. I feel that since steve has taken leave from apple, they have done some strange (but good) things, such as the ipod shuffle (which is the worst iPod in the world, BUT the best iPod shuffle ever, (think about it!)) and the iPhone/iTouch 3.0 software. You can tell this was NOT steves idea, or that he has come to a sad realization that he cant make everything closed source forever. Take for example, allowing app creators to use and manipulate ipod accesories attached the the pod with no limitations, or allowing to utilize google maps right inside the app, and even have there own built in purchasing system to buy upgrades and add-ons, right inside the app! This is defiantly not steves idea, and obviusly not the track record apple has had since the beginning of time, but this could change how apple works from now on. Could this be the downward spiral that has happened to apple in the past when steve has left and he came back and brought apple to its feet? How he did that was he made everything closed and safe, and now that they are opening there os to developers, this might be a sign of a huge change in apple! What do you think? leave a comment... and now for a sneak peek at what is coming to iPhone and iPod touch!

Cut/Copy and Paste

This appears to be the big one. Daring Fireball wished for it back before Macworld (and reminded us they did) and MacRumors backing up the notion.Kevin Rose told us that it will work with pinch-able quotation marks, and Daring Fireball just weighed in again with:

I have no idea whether this description of how it’s going to work is accurate, but from what I’m hearing Copy-and-Paste is a big part of tomorrow’s announcement.

Push Notifications/Background Multi-Tasking

Another from Daring Fireball’s wish-list that MacRumors backed up, but Kevin Rose said he hadn’t heard anything about. Apple, of course, promised Push Notification back at WWDC 2008, and targeted it for September, though that deadline came and went. Did they fear a MobileMe-style launch failure? Did they realize true background tasking was necessary? Were they just delayed? Or will this still be missing in action come Tuesday?

MMS

No sooner had Apple announced their March 17 event than Boy Genius Reportclaimed they’d heard MMS was coming in the update, but again Kevin Rose said it wasn’t anything on his rumor list.

New App Launcher

Back on Daring Fireball’s site, and yet again given weight by MacRumors, another new addition was wish-listed as an improved, rebuilt SpringBoard, aka the Home Screen that houses all the application icons. Rumors say it could include categories, like the old style PalmOS did.

Tethering

Apple and AT&T said they were working on Tethering, and Boy Genius Reportclaims we’ll finally see it with iPhone OS 3.0. Will it be free? $20 more a month? Not even show up? Guess we’ll see…

Compass

In addition to backing up Daring Fireball’s wish-list, MacRumors added a feature of their own: compass. The Android G1 already has this functionality — when you turns, it knows and can turn the view with you (for example, in incredibly cool looking Google Street View demos). Does the iPhone need this? It would make sense if turn-by-turn GPS apps were about to appear in…

Premium App Store Plus

Rumors of a “premium” App Store Plus have been around for a while, and Wired just brought them back into the spotlight. It would be a place where $20 apps could enjoy attention exclusively away from the free fart apps that glut the regular old App Store. Office suites, high end games, and Turn-by-Turn GPS are all fantasies for this type of deployment. (Though reader antonoj did point out G-Maps has mysteriously disappeared from the App Store, and will “return soon”…) Source :: theiphoneblog.com

Coke cans "flying" over toronto. BCC NEWS

BCC NEWS LIVE COVERAGE June 21st 2007 Toronto was buzzing with the news this morning that in-fact, coke cans as we know them, were "floating" over the skyline. Tens of thousands of torontonians were shocked at the site. One of the bystanders says:

Toronto has been through some strange things, but of them all this is the strangest.

The "sky cans" as the community calls them, are not vengeful, they are in-fact, quite peaceful.  Of all the people that saw this it is the scientists and biochemists are the most exited.

We have never seen such possibilities in manipulating the earths gravitational field, through something called reverse magnetic propulsion. This is used in a way by dolphins and sharks to navigate the water, without having to rely on there smell and sight, but we have never seen it used this way. Uni-corp labs,  Toronto Canada

As seen in the video below, you may as well be just as shocked as millions of people were on friday.
