Wii Review - Fragile Dreams: Farewell Ruins of the Moon

Fragile is a Nintendo exclusive that came out a while back in Japan, and due to popular demand it’s made its way out west, but honestly… I gotta say that I wish it would’ve stayed in the land of the rising sun. I really want to like it but it ended being an experience more boring than engaging.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 Media Explosion

As if we didn’t have enough to be excited about - Nintendo has released even more media for their upcoming Wii title, Super Mario Galaxy 2. With tons of new screenshots and another trailer showing off the use of an Overworld and what seems to be the new hub planet: a small mobile planet in the shape of Mario’s head. It also gives us insight on some new levels, a new mushroom that allows Mario to turn into a boulder and what looks to be yet another fun journey through galaxies!

You can check out the cool artwork and the new trailer after the break!

Editorial - The 3DS Represents Nintendo

When you think of Nintendo what comes to mind? Is it the originality in their mascots; the range of players they reach; or is it their continued focus on innovation? I like to think it’s all three. Whether it’s the fifth million Mario game that never fails to disappoint, or the Dual Screen handheld that took the world by storm – Nintendo shapes the gaming landscape with each and every idea that comes out of their Kyoto headquarters. But with 3D on the way, is it their own innovation they are representing, or is it just a hurdle that technologists just want to say they’ve jumped?

Nintendo 3DS was announced to avoid leak

Gamers everywhere have criticized Nintendo’s choice to announce the upcoming 3DS before the DSi XL had even been released worldwide. Though, it now seems that Nintendo had a proper reason for doing this. It wasn’t their intention to let everyone know about the 3D capable handheld, maybe even wanting to keep it close to the vest until E3, but it appears that CNBC has given us some insight into what just happened:

“Apparently, the Japanese press was all over it and talked with suppliers there and Nintendo just wanted to get out ahead by breaking the news to prevent a leak.

The XL is old news, however, in Japan - and Nintendo is a very Japan-centric organization. This is just the corporate parent in Japan maybe not acting in the best interest of Nintendo of America.”

Billy Pigeon, senior analyst with M2 Research

Will the announcement of the 3DS affect DSi XL sales? Or will the older crowd, whom the XL is marketed for, wait for the new sleek 3D machine? My guess is that those oldie gamers aren’t even privy to the 3DS announcement.

Sony - No 3D for PSP 2

Sony’s SCEA director of hardware and marketing, John Koller, went on record to say that PSP 2 integrating 3D doesn’t seem like it’s going to happen.

“Our focus on 3D right now is on the console,” Koller pointed out. Though he did mention that 3D could well be a “tremendous opportunity” for the Playstation system, but it’s potential for the handheld market is limited. “8 and 9 year-olds playing 3D is a little bit of a stretch given where some of our research is right now,” Koller said.

That’s unless of course Nintendo’s 3DS ends up being the biggest system seller ever, which in that case Sony will then throw all its money into making a “better” 3D experience and try selling it to Nintendo’s already established audience (ala Wiimote/ PS Move).

Tetsuya Nomura - "Kingdom Hearts 3 in development"

One of gaming’s most anticipated sequels, Kingdom Hearts 3 is one that fans of the series have been dying to hear about. Lucky for them in the new Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep Ultimania (a huge encyclopedia about the game) there just so happens to be an interview with Kingdom Hearts mastermind, Tetsuya Nomura, where he reveals that not only is Kingdom Hearts 3 in development, but also two more KH titles as well.

“About the next title, Kingdom Hearts 3 depends on Final Fantasy XIII Versus, but development of the next title is already underway. There are two titles other than Kingdom Hearts 3 in conception, and I think I’ll release one within this year.”

“As from next year, I want to put out a title with multiple main characters.”

“The series won’t end in Kingdom Hearts 3, more like the conclusion of the Xehanort saga.”

“It’s not the case that when Sora’s story is over another hero’s story will begin; Sora will be the hero until the end.”

Tetsuya Nomura - Kingdom Hearts Creator, Designer, Writer

As a Kingdom Hearts fan I’m not into the idea of the series not ending after what we thought would be the final game in the “trilogy”. And it’s even sadder to think that Sora will be the main hero through out any future KH games as well. I am happy to know that the Xehanort saga will finally be resolved - taking a total of 6 games - but I was hoping we’d get to see a much more expanded universe away from the cast we’ve grown accustomed to seeing.

Rumor - More Nintendo 3DS details

Every single blog in existence talked and speculated on it today, Nintendo’s newest addition to the gaming family, the 3DS. And why wouldn’t they? When Nintendo does anything the world stops and watches, as they rightfully should.

New details via Japanese magazine Nikkei, who’s been right more times often than not, has some interesting features rumored to be in the upcoming Nintendo handheld:

  • analog stick
  • vibration pack
  • accelerometer still a maybe
  • sped up wireless connection
  • better battery life
  • a screen smaller than 4 inches

As always, rumors are rumors - take them with a grain of salt.
