How to download those free NES games from the eShop for 3DS Ambassadors

If you bought your 3DS prior to the $70 price cut and accessed the eShop then you’re elgibile to download 10 free NES games from the 3DS’ virtual console this very instant. How do you so? Well, it’s not as easy as just going to what’s available in the eShop catalouge. You’re going to need a little play by play, but it’s nothing we can’t help you with.

As intro’d, there’s a couple of hoops you’re going to have to jump through if you want these freebies… well, I guess you wouldn’t call them that — especially after slashed the price by over 30% just 6 months after you threw down $250 big ones.

Now to get these priceless classics all you have to do is do the following:

How To

  • Visit the eShop
  • Select the Menu option in the top left corner
  • Scroll down and select to Settings
  • Scroll down and select Your Downloads
  • Scroll down until you see the NES games listed for “re-download”
  • The full list of games available: (Donkey Kong Jr., Super Mario Bros., Balloon Fight, The Legend of Zelda, Ice Climber, Wrecking Crew, NES Open Tournament Golf [Mario Open Golf - Japan], Yoshi, Metroid, The Legend of Zelda II: The Adventure of Link)
  • Profit!

It may seem a little backhanded but I suppose it was easier to make it seem as if you already purchased the game (so you could get it for free) then to alter the eShop for every 3DS owner.

FAQ

A few other tidbits of information for NES games played on the 3DS;

None of the aforementioned games are 3D Classics (i.e. Excitebike).

There are no save states like in emulators, however the game will pause at your current location whenever you decide to multi-task and head on over to another app or game (this works even if you turn off the system).

Games are not available for purchase for non-Ambassador’s at the moment.

Some NES titles will get free updates in the future to include multi-player and other enhancements.
