Rumor - PopCap asking for $1 billion in acquisition from unknown buyer
PopCap, the fellows responsible for releasing hit after hit in the casual friendly space of PC and mobile platforms with Peggle, Bejeweled, and Plants vs. Zombies, is apparently in talks with an unknown buyer to be acquired.
There’s not a whole lot of juicy details behind this developing story beyond the fact that Tech Crunch has discovered the game studio has slapped a ridiculous $1 billion dollar price on itself. The mysterious buyer at this point in the game could be anyone, but the suspects in the line up include gaming giant Electronic Arts and Chinese gaming mogul Tencent.
PopCap’s official statement at the moment is: “we do not comment on rumors and speculation of this nature.” While the company may want to keep this hush hush, it’s hard to deny a claim of acquistion or a buyout when Tech Crunch has let the word out. Last time we get wind of one of these stories was when Microsoft purchased Skype right from underneath our noses.
