SGP Incredible Shield Ultra Matte for T-Mobile G2 review

Here at Okay Geek we’re big fans of minimalism - we rarely use cases on our mobile devices and often opt for protective films instead. We’ve reviewed SGP’s Incredible Shield before but today we’re going to take a look at the matte version of the skin.

Features

  • The highest level of abrasion resistance
  • State-of-the art UV inhibitors
  • Perfect fits for the device
  • Easily removable

Our Impressions

The SGP Incredible Shield Ultra Matte comes in a bright orange box with the skin, screen protector, microfiber cloth, squeegee, application spray, 4 dust removal stickers, and a product authentication card. Everything is protected by a small paper envelope except for the bottle of spray and plastic squeegee.

The skin comes in eight pieces - five for the front and three for the back. On the back, there’s a bottom piece, top and side piece, and the battery cover. The front consists of the top, two side strips, the area around the trackpad, and the trackpad. Coverage on the G2 is pretty good. Through the usage of several smaller pieces, SGP is able to cover most of the device. Note that the bottom corners on the front are left exposed. Slits for items such as the volume rocker are well cut and line up perfectly. The strip on the side of the battery release latch is a little too long though but it wasn’t anything a quick incision with scissors couldn’t fix. The skin has a matte texture rather than a glossy one but the surface is rather grippy and adds a nice soft touch feel.

Since the SGP Incredible Shield is a wet application film, we turned off our G2 and took out the battery. Spraying our fingertips, we removed the skin from the sheet and sprayed the adhesive some more. Using the included squeegee and cloth, we pushed out all the air bubbles. Most air bubbles will disappear within 12-24 hours but some will take days to become completely unnoticeable. We recommend that after applying the SGP Incredible Shield that you don’t immediately put in your battery and turn the phone on. It’s best to leave it overnight or for as long as possible just in case any of the solution dripped into the phone.

The trackpad sticker is horrible. When you apply the skin, do yourself a favor and skip the trackpad part. Why? It renders the trackpad completely unusable. You can still press it but it won’t detect any gestures at all. You can try all you want but the skin is just too thick for the trackpad to detect anything.

The screen protector is of the Ultra Crystal (clear) variety. It boasts a surface hardness of 4H and no rainbow effect. The screen protector is protected in the front and back by two pieces of thinner plastic film. It’s a breeze to apply and is precisely cut out. The Ultra Crystal screen protector doesn’t interfere with touch gestures or screen visibility and it feels pretty good to the touch.

Overall

The SGP Incredible Shield Ultra Matte is definitely one of the better protective films we’ve used. Although it’s applied using a spray on solution, the process is pretty simple and the result is fantastic. A great looking matte coat on our G2 also increased grip in the hand. Do we recommend it? Definitely.
