Sony Files Trademark Claim for PS Vita

Early last week we reported that Sony’s upcoming handheld console, known to most as the NGP or ‘Next Generation Portable,’ would be branded the “PS Vita.” While at first some felt as though the name was seemingly ridiculous, it now appears as though the name PS Vita will be sticking around. Last friday in Europe, Sony Computer Entertainment filed a pair of trademark claims for both the name “PS Vita” and its pairing logo.

According to NeoGAF forum user B.D. both trademarks were filed in the Trademarks and Designs Registration Office of the European Union. The filing, which is believed to correspond with Sony’s Next Generation Portable is yet to be confirmed. However, I wouldn’t hesitate to guess that the PS Vita will more than not be the name of Sony’s NGP. Still, to remain on the safe side, it would be best to wait for Sony’s E3 press event before placing all your eggs in one basket.

For those that are curious, Sony’s press event is due to kick off at 5pm PDT on Monday the 6th of June — the event is viewable on GameTrailers.com.
