The New 52 - DC Comics reboot begins tomorrow
The most ambitious event in the history of modern comics starts tomorrow. DC Comics is rebooting every character in their entire universe and launching “The New 52”; starting with industry rock stars Jim Lee and Geoff Johns’ new take on Justice League No. 1 which goes on sale at 11:59 PM at comic stores around the country.
DC is also taking the comic digital distribution model and doing something no other publisher has ever done: day and date digital releases. Justice League No. 1 is unique in that it launches with 2 different issues: one with just the issue itself, and one with that includes a code for a free digital download. The hype is surrounding Justice League has been tremendous and it’s working—pre-orders of Justice League No. 1 have tipped the scales at 200,000 making it the most successful comic of 2011.
Being the resident comic-geek, the most difficult thing for me is what to recommend that people read. Given the perpetual story arcs, changes, and cross-overs it’s hard (and sometimes impossible) for me to pick the right time for a reader to jump-in and for them not feel lost—which is why I usually go the graphic novel route. By rebooting their entire universe, DC is making things 100% accessible to everyone. So if you’ve ever thought about comics, wanted to read an issue, or are curious to see what the state of digital comics are on your iPad, now is the time.
Okay Geek will be a midnight launch event tomorrow night so expect a review of not only Jim Lee and Geoff Johns’ iconic take on Justice League, but also how things flow in digital form on the iPad.
