Windows 8 pre-beta demo - Very slick, fast and new, but does it make sense?
We don’t quite understand if this is Windows on a tablet, or Windows for a tablet. There’s a big difference between an operating system designed for a tablet and an OS just simply able to run on a tablet, and Microsoft is trying to offer the best of both worlds, but we’re not quite sure how much sense it makes.
I mean we clearly understand the benifits of the Metro UI (not to mention it’s sexy as hell), but even though it’s a great interface for tablets, at the same time it demotes Windows as a desktop class operating system. Microsoft is fixing this by including a second interface much similar to that of Windows 7, but we don’t quite understand how having essentially two operating systems (tablet, desktop) will help users get “the best of both worlds” when they have to constantly switch between the two.
Windows 8 looks great, and the Metro UI is as awesome as ever, but the notion of having two completely different interfaces running on your PC at the same time is unsettling, and will maybe difficult for mainstream users to grasp. We trust Microsoft to pump out another great operating system, but we’re just concerned that the PC has suddenly slipped away from their business plans all together.
