Wolverine pirate gets 1 year of federal prison and we wonder if it was worth it

It’s been nearly two years to the day when we first reported news about Gilerbto Sanchez, a.k.a. the guy who uploaded the leaked, unfinished version of the Oscarworthy, Marvel masterpiece X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Well, the verdict has come and its been decreed upon this evil man who would dare share such a crappy movie with millions of would-be piraters, that he be given 1 full year in a federal prison. Dang, son! I wonder if Ryan Reynolds will visit him in the clink?

The Hollywood Reporter says that Gilberto will be sentenced to one year of federal prison (read as: rectal reconstruction) for being convicted on one count of uploading X-Men Origins: Wolverine onto MegaUpload.

To give you some backstory, Gilberto was not the original person who leaked the workprint of Origins, which was close to completion though it didn’t have some of its special effects finished (wait a minute, how do we know? Don’t worry about it…). But because Sanchez was the one who uploaded the film onto MegaUpload he’s being charged for the millions of dollars lost because of his freedom fighting escapades (who dares pay for entertainment!?) And just for your notes, despite it being one of the worst films done by the studio, it still was able to pull off $373 in worldwide box office sales.

US Attorney Andre Birotte Jr. said in a statement that he believes this was a message from the movie industry to anyone brave enough to pirate (and be caught):

“The federal prison sentence handed down in this case sends a strong message of deterrence to would-be Internet pirates. The Justice Department will pursue and prosecute persons who seek to steal the intellectual property of this nation.”

So again, the question must be raised to Sanchez: Was it worth it?
