Microsoft investigating "phantom data" glitch on Windows 7 phones
If you have a Windows Phone 7 you might want to take a look at your mobile’s recent data consumption activity. Why is this? There aren’t any specifics as to how big this issue has become, but quite a few users have reported that their phones are mysteriously sending large packets of data, which in effect is causing them to go over their data plans significantly. Microsoft says they’re looking into it.
Talking to the BBC, a Microsoft spokesperson touched on the problem:
“We are investigating this issue to determine the root cause and will update with information and guidance as it becomes available.”
And just like that the mystery remains unsolved; they didn’t even attempt to lend tips for temporary solutions, which sucks for users who have reported consistent amounts of “phantom data” — in the increments of 25MB to 50MB, totaling up as high as 400MB — being sent and received over days at a time. And this sure as heck doesn’t help customers who may be on AT&T’s 200MB data plan, who are just begging that these charges will get retracted once the storm is over.
