New Ultimate Spider-Man is half-Mexican half-African american
A new Spider-Man for a new age, I like the direction Marvel is taking by changing up the usual requirements that go into any comic book hero; the necessity of them being white.
For a culture as diverse as the world itself, the US and its heroes ought to reflect the everyman — y’know, the ones who usually become super hereos by some sort of freak accident, like say getting bit by a radioactive spider.
How will audiences take to this new web-slinger, who isn’t just black, but half-Mexican and half-African American?
USA Today got a sneak peek into the new #1 Ultimate Spider-Man series, which actually was meant to be a secret until its release in September. Peter Parker was killed off in June, and so another young hero must take his place, and so a multi-cultured lad by the name of Miles Morales takes on the web-slinger’s mantel.
Brian Michael Bendis, a Ultimate series veteran and consultant, hopes that the revealing of this new Spider-Man will be for the better:
“The theme is the same: With great power comes great responsibility. He’s going to learn that. Then he has to figure out what that means.
It’s certainly long overdue. Even though there’s some amazing African-American and minority characters bouncing around in all the superhero universes, it’s still crazy lopsided.”
Taking ques from last year’s Twitter explosion where Donald Glover, star of the NBC comedy Community, pleaded with fans to recommend him for the job of Spider-Man in the upcoming Amazing Spider-Man film reboot, which ultimately cast Andrew Garfield of The Social Network fame. And the inspiration for Miles’ look was also taken from Glover’s appearance, much the same way Samuel L. Jackson was the unofficial model for what became the much more well-received Ultimate version of Nick Fury.
The first look into the new Spider-Man will be Wednesday where Ultimate Fallout #4 is released on paper, as well as digitally around the world.
