Nintendo 3DS firmware update and eShop -- Everything you need to know
If you have your 3DS’ WiFi toggle switch on then you should have a notification waiting for you, explaining what tonight’s 3DS firmware update will entail. We’ve been waiting all evening and our 3Ds just finally started updating. So what do you get once that status bar reaches 100%? Well, how about access to Nintendo’s new eShop store, a flash-less internet browser, and a free download of an ehanced version of the NES classic Excitebike.
UPDATE: Downloading the update very slowly is normal, as is the case with hundreds of people who have mentioned so on Twitter. Also, as of 10:20PM PST the eShop channel is currently down for maitenance. Well, so much for that!
What you get
- eShop: a virtual console selection of games from “legendary” plaforms such as Gameboy, Gameboy Color, TurboGrfx 16, and Sega Game Gear.
- Gameboy games available now: Super Mario Land ($3.99), Alleyway ($2.99), Radar Mission ($2.99)
- Internet browser: multi-tasking available browser that lets you visit sites while paused within a currently playing game. No support for plug-in’s, flash, or PDF’s. Pages and images can be zoomed in on, with images capable of being saved to the SD card.
- Autotmatic updates: software updates can now be automatically downloaded and installed to your 3DS is in Sleep Mode and WiFi toggle switch is enabled)
- 3DS to DSi system transfer: DSiWare purchased on your original DSi can now be transferred over to your new 3DS via this option.
- PokeDex 3D: free download forever on eShop
- 3D Classics Excitebike: limited edition free download until 7/7 on eShop, afterwhich $5.99
How to update
Once you’ve finished downloading you’ll be asked to restart you system, after which you’ll now see the eShop icon on your home screen, and have access to the new enabled Internet Browser in the top right corner.
Important Note: For Ridge Racer 3D owners, the update may have cause some gamebreaking glitches, so update at your own risk. Namco has already stated that a software patch will be released very shortly to help remedy this glitch.
