Blu-ray Already Out of Date?

Wal-Mart is cutting back on DVD and Blu-ray display area.

Is this the end to buying movie in stores? Has the time finally come where people realize it's smarter to buy a movie on iTunes so you can transfer to every type of electronic you own?

According to Engadget.com more people are now renting from Itunes, Netflix, and Redbox. Most people just rent movies from these very convenient sites and just copy the movie so they always have it. Of course this is completely illegal but whose regulating and how are they going to stop it?

One day you won't even have DVD's or CD's, or they will be come so rare that they are collectors items. The digital age has come and it's not stopping anytime soon. Being able to watch any movie, anytime, just by the click of the button will soon be.

Company Claims Windows 7's Boot Times are worse than Vista's Boot Times

A company named ioIo technologies ran a test on Window 7's boot times. They found that on a fresh machine, Windows 7 boots up a minute and 34 seconds, versus Vista's minute and 6 seconds. Then they let the computer run for about three months before testing again. They found that the computer boots up in 2 minutes and 34 seconds. Naturally I wanted to try this, as I have Windows 7 Ultimate RC on my laptop, which is a Dell Inspiron 1520 with a Core 2 Duo T7500, 2GB of RAM, and a 5400RPM drive, and the OS was installed as an upgrade on top of Vista. I also installed this roughly two months ago.

Final boot time, which is from pressing the on button to waiting for the CPU and HDD to stop working on the desktop? 1 minute 17 seconds. Hm.

To hurt ioIo's credibility even more:

  • They didn't say what the machine was
  • What else the machine had installed (programs, etc.)
  • What they were doing with the machine for those three months
  • The piece de resistance: They're a company that sells software for tuning up PCs.

So much for them getting me to buy their software!

HTC HD2 has a new Promo video and a website!

It has been a while since we last heard of the HTC HD2 and now it has popped up again in this snazzy little promo video, displaying all its glory and wonder -- now you may be thinking, when can I get this HTC masterpiece? -- You might have to wait until next year to score the HTC HD2 but hopefully in Q1 or Q2. They also have a cool little website too...

How to set up and use CamStudio to record your desktop

CamStudio is a wonderful tool, that's free, you can use to record things happening on your computer screen. If you're not into burning money on similar software and you aren't a stickler to absolute quality, CamStudio is a perfect tool. The only problem is, it's deceptively hard to get great quality. This is a tutorial on not only how to set up CamStudio correctly for the best quality (and what some options do), but also how to fix a common problem with the results.

System Requirements

OS: Windows XP, Vista, or 7.
CPU: Preferably Intel Core 2 Duo or AMD Phenom X3 or X4, or better. The more cores you have the better.
GPU: Not a real factor
RAM: You probably want at least 2GB for long haul videos.
HDD: Lots. You could end up with gigabyte sized files.

Get the programs

If you don't already have it, download CamStudio at http://camstudio.org/.
You'll also need VirtualDub for video correction purposes. Download the 32-bit version, regardless if you have a 64-bit operating environment. If you use the 64-bit version, most of the codecs you have installed will not show up or be compatible with the 64-bit version of VirtualDub.

Both applications are free and open source if you're into that sort of thing.

Video: Nokia phones have a purpose - the Testing Lab

You may be wondering, "why does my Nokia flip phone, not get all flipped out?" or "Why does my Phone not stop working when I leave it on the washing machine?" -- well this is why -- at Nokia's research and development facility in San Diego, they have a series of intricate tests they stress their current, and upcoming phones with.

The cool part is, Engadget got to visit this wonderful place and then they made this video, with joyful music and lots of button pressing and sliders sliding.

Youtube wants us to use our Google passwords from now on - Why?

I was making a new podcast, as I usally do every wednesday and I finished editong it, so I went to go upload it to Youtube. So I sign in and then I see this message:

Please start signing in with your Google password from now on. Pretty soon we will be phasing out support for signing in with your old YouTube password.

and I was wondering, why the hell would they do this? It makes no sense. Why just start "phasing out" our own passwords that we have made for our Youtube accounts.

How to fix this, and our rant on the situation after the break [...]
