Left 4 Dead 2 DLC "The Passing" Out This Week

As if we didn’t get enough news with the announcements of Bionic Commando: Re-Armed 2 and Marvel vs Capcom 3, if you head over to the Left 4 Dead blog, Valve has announced that “The Passing” DLC will be releasing this Thursday for the low price of FREE on the PC, and for 560 Microsoft Points on 360.

The DLC contains one new campaign, where the original L4D survivors collide with the L4D2 characters, with Valve revealing that one character from the original group (that’s Bill, Francis, Louis and Zoey) didn’t make it, and won’t be appearing in “The Passing.” Looking at the “movie poster” you can see the outlines of the original survivors and there are, indeed, only three. I thought it was pretty obvious looking for the missing outline on the poster picture but apparently Valve is changing the picture every day, with a different Survivor not showing up on the poster. I wonder who it could be?

It’s not all bad news though, the DLC will also contain:”a new co-operative challenge mode of play, support for infected bot play in Versus, a new “uncommon common” zombie class (the fallen survivor), melee weapon (golf club), and firearm (M-60).” But the most interesting new addition to the game is something called “Mutations,” which are weekly events that alter existing game modes. These can range from Realism Versus, which ensures that no Survivors will ever… well survive, to the Chainsaw Massacre, where you only have chainsaws with unlimited gasoline. All I can say to that is, hell yes!

There’s no word on when the DLC for L4D, which will detail the events of one of the original survivor’s death, and the remaining three’s adventures to get to the events of “The Passing”, will be released, however it was planned to be around one month after “The Passing” releases.

iPad Banned from a few Universities

iPad Banned from a few Universities

It’s the discussion that has to be made - devices like the iPad are only going to become more and more prevalent, and the world itself is going to have to upgrade, so to speak, to catch up with all the increasing amount of data being sent back and forth between the growing number of adopters of this new tech.

Yes, some Uni’s are banning it, but this is the road to the future. You can’t just block the road because you aren’t prepared for it. Eventually these guys are going to have to put in the money to sustain these “bandwidth hogs” because this only going to become more standard, and the norm, as time goes on.

Rumor - Nintendo 3DS releasing in October

It will be playable at this year’s E3 but no one expected it to come out this soon - CVG is reporting that “industry sources” believe the 3DS handheld, first announced a month ago, will be available and out on store shelves this October. Pretty bold talk if you ask me, but then again a lot of these rumors usually end being true, though, I do caution you to take this with a grain of salt as always.

Their source had this to say:

“It’s a surprise - we were expecting it much closer to Christmas. But I suppose it gives Nintendo the opportunity to get it front and centre in people’s minds nice and early…  In my experience, you don’t launch a product that early to Christmas unless you’re confident in it - and going to spend a lot of money on it. We’re reassured that Nintendo is going to give it some decent backing in Q4.”

Could we be looking at a 10/10/10 release date? That smells a lot like the 9/9/99 Dreamcast launch - oh nostalgic memories.

No way! Zune HD plays Doom

Its a surprise! A mobile device can play Doom! - Well it isn’t all that exciting, heck an iPod classic can play Doom, but I guess the new benchmark for smartphones is now Doom. It is pretty cool that the new OpenZDK, which is an open source development kit for the Zune, made it possible to play an old classic - Read more

iPhone 4 complete Teardown

Steve Jobs is probably raging right now, at his desk, glasses pressed to the screen looking at these photos on Gizmodo. This is the 100% confirmed iPhone bought for $10,000 dollars by Gizmodo from a worrisome guy who found it on a bar stool. Who left it on the bar stool? A tipsy Apple software engineer who’s job is on the line. Now it’s in peices, and its just lovely - Read more

Ubisoft going green and ditching paper

Ubisoft has made a commitment to completely ditch paper manuals after this holiday season. Beginning with the release of the next Shaun White title, all Ubisoft games will come with a digital copy of the manual as well as a version that will be accessibly in-game.

While it’s obviously a money saving move to Ubisoft it’s nice to see that the company is trying to save some dough while helping the environment. There shouldn’t be too much uproar in the community as digitally distributed content dishes out their manuals in a similar fashion.

Depending on how much positive press Ubisoft receives for the change it isn’t far fetched to think other companies may follow in their footsteps.

Bionic Commando Re-Armed 2 trailer

Bionic Commando Re-Armed 2 trailer

Along with MvC3, during Capcom’s Captivate event held in Hawaii last week Bionic Commando Re-Armed 2 was also announced.

I was a huge fan of the original Re-Armed (a remake of the NES classic Bionic Commando), and I was sad to hear that the original development studio, Grin, was done away with. But alas, Capcom’s got a new team (with ties to Grin) on the project and the game looks as good as it ever did. Oh and did I mention Rad can jump this time around?

Bionic Commando Re-Armed 2 is due out Q1 of 2011.
