Steve Jobs - 7-inch Tablets are "too big to be a phone, and too small to compete with the iPad"

Apple is shipping 4.1 Million iPads every quarter, and there’s no sign of slowing down. Steve Jobs is obviously very happy about the success of the iPad, and he is as “humble” as he can be. The thing is, he isn’t too fond of the competition.

“Given that tablet users will have a smartphone in their pocket, there’s no point in giving up screen size. Seven inch tablets are tweeners — too big to be a phone, and too small to compete with the iPad.”Steve Jobs, Apples earnings call

He does have a point — competitors are spreading the selection way to thick, and consumers are probably going to decide on a tablet or a smartphone — instead of getting both.

Now remember, Steve Jobs is the one that said nobody would want to watch video on their iPod, and that Multitasking was never going to come to the iPhone — but this claim from the Apple CEO seems to have a fair argument, unlike those other statements.

iPad vs BlackBerry PlayBook Specs

Titan of the tablet industry, Apple, came under fire yesterday when the BlackBerry PlayBook was announced. Geeks have been absolutely raving over the device — sporting a dual-core processor, multitasking, two HD cameras, a 7” multitouch display and 1GB of RAM (just to name a few things). The iPad until now has been un-touched by the few competitors it has, and Blackberry seems to be on the right track to undermining the iPad. One thing is for sure — once HP announces the WebOS Slate, things are going to get very messy…

RIM Announces the PlayBook - 7" BlackBerry Tablet

Yes, this is the long rumored 7” BlackBerry tablet that we’ve all been waiting for. At today’s BlackBerry Developer’s Conference, RIM certainly blew some minds away by announcing one of the only serious competitors to Apple’s already massively famous iPad. Specced out with a 1Ghz dual core processor, 1 GB of RAM, a 7” 1024 x 600 capacitive display, dual HD cameras (3 megapixel front and 5 megapixel back), along with other competitive specs, this will certainly give Apple a run for their money. BlackBerry Tablet OS lets you multitask and record full 1080p video. Weighing in at under a pound, it certainly packs in a lot of goodies including a pretty attractive interface quite similar in appearance to Palm’s WebOS. Expect 3G and 4G models in the future while no pricing or availability was announced. Aren’t we all just glad it’s not called the BlackPad?

HP Slate Hands on - Dissapointment and Regret

HP Slate Hands on - Dissapointment and Regret

Look what we have here! It is an HP Slate — which after being canceled, dismissed and forgotten, has popped up in a hands on video, with the early prototype. Sadly, it looks to be (yet another) half assed tablet that runs a desktop OS. HP doesn’t seem to realize that fingers aren’t supposed to use a desktop interface! Tiny little buttons, and… and a mouse?

Now one thing is very clear — this isn’t aimed at the consumer market (and if it is, lord help them). I regret ever having put “hope” into the HP slate, because after seeing the prototypes and feeling the excitement — this really let me down. It’s like stepping back into the 90’s and watching someone struggle with a tablet PC (that your supposed to use a pen with), and tap everything 5 times until it finally registers. This tablet demonstrates everything that is wrong with full OS’s on tablets…

iPad running iOS 4.2 hands on demo

iPad running iOS 4.2 hands on demo

We are all desperately waiting for iOS 4.2 so that our iPads will be able to multitask like crazy — and even though the update has been pushed from a September release, to a November release, people are still pretty excited. The new OS features multitasking (of course), folders, Game Center, AirPlay, unified email inboxes and a bunch more, including numerous bug fixes and printing.

This video was shot by the chaps at The iPhone Blog, and is really a good demo video (minus some weird camera work). It’s titled “iOS 4.2 for iPad in 10 minutes - TiPb video quick-start guide”, but the video is 7 Min, and noted by a commenter on Youtube “at the end it says 2010 iPod nano in10 minutes” — but never mind that!

HP says webOS tablets are going to be "similar to the iPad"

Ever since HP bought Palm we’ve heard that they’d put webOS on tablet devices, but it looks as though their beginning to make good on their early 2011 due date. In an email to the Palm developer community, HP’s Peter Helm stated that webOS will be used on “tablet-style devices similar to the iPad.” You can check out the full email below:

Samsung Galaxy Tab Hands on Video

The Galaxy Tab seems to be all the rage in the Tablet-o-sphere, and has recently been seen in news articles and real-world photos for the first time, but until yesterday there hasn’t been a good video demo of the device and it’s features. This is the first good hands-on video by Canadian blog MobileSyrup who talk about the tab for a good 4 minutes and demonstrate the main key features.

Are you planning to buy a Tab? - Tell us in the comments!
