t3chh3lp Interview - Social Media Superhero, MissDestructo

You may have heard of her, you may have not, but one thing that you are aware of is social media. And as a self dubbed Social Media Superhero, Miss Destructo makes the rounds finding businesses to aide them enter the new digitally interwoven world.

Whether you use them or not there's no denying the power of social networks, Myspace, Facebook, Twitter - they've all changed the way we communicate, but more importantly they've changed the way companies advertise to their audience. Here's where our interviewee, Miss Destructo, comes into the picture. With thousands of people following her on Twitter she's become a bit of an official unofficial guru to this new trend in advertising. Whether it's her snazzy style and blue hair, or her love for Bruce's Yams, she's got our attention and we'd like to ask her a few questions.

I got a chance to have a short interview with her, to ask her what she thinks people should know about social media and about herself.

Leo Laporte and friends get random woman 3,200 followers in 40 min

A random act of kindness during the recording of TWiT - Episode 238 gave Lisa Etheridge a solid 3,200 followers in less than 40 minutes at an alarming rate of 80 followers per minute or 1.3 followers a second. She got her mass Twitter followers after Leo and Kevin Rose were inspired by Conan's previus act of kindness and it was up to Kevin to find a user at random and Lisa was that user.

After they mentioned her on the show, her follower count increased to about 1000, but after the story made it to the front page of Digg, her follower count rocketed to 3,200 and beyond. Near the end of the Episode, Leo seemed worried that she may not be as enthused about this as they were, so he offered to buy her an iPad and pay for her SMS bills. You need a pat on the back Leo!

Seesmic Look - Maybe the best Desktop Twitter app Ever

A lot of the trouble with Twitter is that it relies on 3rd party sources to give you an experience - because the website itself can be pretty boring for some! Think about it - Twitter.com has never been your main way of tweeting because it doesn’t offer URL shortening or other special goodies; it’s just a box to type in. I am afraid though that at the end of this review you may want to re-think the way you use Twitter, forever.

Image: Over 40 Million Tweets per Day

Twitter's blog released this image and wrote that they get 50 million tweets a day on average. What I don't understand is if that's true then why doesn't the graph reflect that? Hmmm, good question.

One other fun fact: 600 tweets are posted each second.

A Twitter Capable Commodore VIC-20

Just when you thought your Eee PC was slow, and using Twitter was painful, this gem makes you want to stop feeling sorry for yourself. This Commodore VIC-20 is running software from a cassette tape, has only 5 KB of RAM, and a processor that runs at 1 MHz. Ancient we know, but it is back in buisness and ready to do everything in 140 characters or less.

Using custom software called TweetVER, the folks at the PC Museum will be accessing Twitter from this VIC-20, and loving every keystroke and @reply. You can read the first tweet on Saturday February 20th at 11am EST by following the museum's Twitter account. Its really cool that something so old, something so slow ( 3000 times slower then a personal PC ) is capable of using, and embracing something so new.
